It’s being reported that Jay Z is leaning on Travis Scott to ditch his upcoming Super Bowl appearance. Yesterday, it was announced that Travis would join Maroon 5 on the big night, and other performers to be revealed at a later date. Although Travis’ fans are supportive of the NFL gig, many celebrities are not, but it’s not like they have skin in the game. Jay Z, however, is another story altogether. His support of Colin Kaepernick and stance against police brutality are well known. In addition to being an outspoken voice on social issues, Jay Z’s business holdings are epic. He’s the founder of Roc Nation, Roc Nation Sports, and Tidal – his own music download service. Jay Z is extremely powerful. If mister Carter wants Travis Scott to stand down, he may very well do just that.
However, there is no good reason for Travis Scott to turn down the Super Bowl. His album has been number one or near number one for months now, and a Super Bowl performance is a crowning achievement he could be proud of for a lifetime. After all, do you see any NFL athletes quitting their teams and refusing an NFL pay check…hell no. If they feel so strongly about their opposition to the league, that would be a great way to really make a stand. That’s what you and I would do if we really wanted to send a message to an employer – we would quit and find another job.
So ask yourself, why then does a guy like Jay Z peddle his athletes to the NFL, but ask others to refuse doing business with the organization? Can you say “hypocrisy”? I can.
Travis needs to stay focused and keep entertaining his fans, period. If it don’t make money, it don’t make sense. We’ll keep you posted on what happens with this situation. Until next time people…
