DRAKE SIGNS DANCEHALL ARTIST POPCAAN TO HIS NEW LABEL – OVO SOUND!

There hasn’t been an announcement from either party, but reports are that Popcaan has just signed to Drake’s new OVO Sound record label. Popcaan first hit the Dancehall scene with his hit “Clarks” featuring Vybz Kartel back in 2010. He’s only had a couple studio albums since that time, but a lot of hot singles and plenty of international recognition. Check the sold out crowd he just performed in front of at Wembley Stadium, London.

There’s a debate brewing over whether this is a good move by Drake. I say it’s a genius move, for two reasons. This pick-up is a safe one because Popcaan already has so many fans around the world, and he’s still young. The other reason it’s genius is that Drake has the music savvy to bring this artist to the US market successfully.

There are so many super hot Dancehall artists out there with international followings that the US market has very little exposure to. The reasons are many, but the bottom line is, it can be done, but nobody is doing it. Let’s watch Drake work with this situation, and see just how it drips. We’ll be bringing you the next chapter in this story for sure, Peace!
