A Cook County Grand Jury has decided to charge Jussie Smollett with filing a false police report, which is a class 4 felony. He faces a maximum of 3 years in jail. The Osundairo brothers’ detailed and verifiable testimony was, apparently, enough to put the Empire actor in real hot water.
The State’s Attorney, Kim Foxx, has recused herself from the case, but the levers of justice in Chicago seem to be working just fine. Police have obtained video evidence of the brothers buying ski masks and MAGA hats the day before the fake incident went down…
Just today, Empire producers released a statement in support of Jussie, but it will be interesting to see how the network responds now that he’s been charged with a felony. Will they run from the controversy, or steer directly into it?
For his part, Jussie and his legal team aren’t giving an inch. Here’s the statement his lawyers just put out…
“Like any other citizen, Mr. Smollett enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked. Given these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and to mount and aggressive defense.”
