Empire star Jussie Smollett walked into a Chicago courtroom again this morning to enter a plea of “not guilty” to six brand new charges of lying to police – the state’s case against Jussie, 2.0, if you will. And just like the last time, it was a frantic, high-charged scene full of supporters and detractors alike.
As you can see from this TMZ video, reporters were literally falling over themselves for a picture as Jussie walked into the courthouse. The six new charges brought by special prosecutor Dan Webb are all called “disorderly conduct,” but they’re all about lying to cops – not FBI agents, city cops. As Jussie left the courthouse, he can be seen arm in arm with a group of women, lawyers and family presumably, before going in his ride and making off.
Just to add to the chaos, Ola and Abel Osundairo were also present at today’s hearing. Their lawyer, Gloria Schmidt, actually held a courthouse press conference saying, “The brothers want the public to know that they were honest, and open, and remorseful about their conduct involved in this entire event.”
Many were asking exactly why the Osundairo brothers were even there… it wasn’t their court date. However, Schmidt made it clear the brothers never recieved an immunity deal from prosecution in Jussie Smollett’s first round of charges, and as we all know, they were never needed to testify.
The Osundairo brothers probably just want to make it clear they’re still on “team prosecution,” given the hot potato of a case it’s turned out to be and the political nature of Dan Webb’s appointment – his prosecutorial guns could easily turn on them. The brothers are probably very right to be worried.
Jussie faces up to 3 years in jail if convicted, and apparently, he’s already paid a $10,000 fine over the matter. But that doesn’t mean anything now because the new case just kicked off, and the chorus of interested parties out for blood in “The Curious Case of Jussie Smollett” continues to grow.
Until the next time it drips…
