Vanessa Bryant filed documents for a wrongful death lawsuit today in Los Angeles. She’s claiming the pilot, along with the helicopter company involved in the deadly crash that killed Kobe and her daughter Gigi, were both negligent. The suit names the flight company as Island Express and also names the pilot, Ara George Zobayan, who lost his life in the crash as well.
TMZ says there is no amount specified thus far, but the things for whichVanessa is looking for damages seem to be very interesting, even creative. For instance, along with things like loss of support and burial and funeral costs, Vanessa’s legal team wants damages for “pre impact terror.”
Apparently, you take that to mean just how it sounds… the emotional terror Kobe and Gigi must have felt while the pilot was struggling with the aircraft, just before it went down. Anyone can imagine a grieving mother with that thought running over and over again in her head.
Vanessa’s also looking for damages for “loss of love” which, according to court documents, includes comfort, affection, society, care, companionship, right to support, solace or moral support, the right to future support and counseling.
The documents detail Vanessa’s accusation that Island Express is only allowed to operate under visual flight rules, and flight conditions on that day should’ve grounded the helicopter. Essentially, they took risks with the lives of the passengers on board and it ended in tragedy.
As for Island Express, they recently issued this statement… “This was a tragic accident. We will have no comment on the pending lawsuit.”
All of this is happening under the backdrop of a Staples Center packed with mourning fans. Kobe’s teammates and basketball legends like Michael Jordan have been gathering in memory of Kobe, Gigi and all the people that lost their lives.
We’ll let you know when Vanessa Bryant’s legal team puts a number on those damages they’re asking the court for. Until the next time it drips…
