NICKI MINAJ SAYS THE GRAMMYS GAVE HER BEST NEW ARTIST AWARD TO “THE WHITE MAN”

International superstar rapper and new mom Nicki Minaj just lashed out at the Grammys for a trophy snub of Best New Artist back in 2012. As the Grammy organization is handing out its current nominations to happy nominees, Nicki Minaj shouted about 2012 from her Twitter handle… “They gave it to the white man “Bon Iver.”

The longtime super talented Young Money/Cash Money artist is apparently still pissed she lost to Bon Iver back then, which is actually a folk group. Nicki pointedly shared with her followers, “Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on Billboard….”

Instead, Bon Iver took the award even though they had only released two singles by Grammy time, with the track “Halocene” leading in sales. The group’s album, Bon Iver, Bon Iver, was actually their second studio album, while Pink Friday was Nicki Minaj’s first studio offering.

Pink Friday blew up the whole year of 2011 with one hot single after another, just like Nicki said. We know winners are picked by Academy members and record sales aren’t the only factor, but seriously, why didn’t Nicki Minaj get the Best New Artist nod she clearly feels like she earned?

A clue might be in the fact Pink Friday actually dropped in late 2010… too early to earn a Grammy nomination for the “Your Love” artist in 2011, but perhaps too late for Nicki to still seem like a truly new act by 2012. By the Grammy ceremony that year, Nicki Minaj had so much success it likely seemed odd to still call her a new artist. While Nicki Minaj had no studio albums other than Pink Friday, she had released three mixtapes and had been signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money records since 2009.

It’s true the “Moment 4 Life” singer has inspired a generation with her talent – it would be hard to debate that assertion. Who knows why Nicki didn’t get her Best New Artist Grammy, but it seems obvious she’s suggesting there’s a racial component to her loss. Pink Friday was a triple platinum record. It really is hard to imagine all of that success going for naught if Nicki Minaj were white and Bon Iver were black.

Now the industry is abuzz waiting to see if Nicki would like to provide more details about the subject. We’ll let you know if ‘Queen’ speaks again. Until the next time it drips…
