In a completely surprising move by the entertainment industry household name, Justin Timberlake officially apologized to both Janet Jackson and his 90’s ex-girlfriend, Britney Spears.
Justin posted the lengthy, long overdue about face over social media, saying…
“I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed.”
Justin and Britney dated way back in the 90’s as they both tried to navigate dueling international Pop stardom and their romantic relationship. When the couple was breaking up, Justin Timberlake was one of the first public voices criticizing Britney Spears for her erratic and manic behaviors – symptoms foreshadowing an epic battle with mental illness that would eventually take over the superstar’s life.
As for Janet Jackson… well, most of us know about the ‘nipple seen around the world’ at the Halftime Show of Super Bowl XXXVIII. In the aftermath, Justin Timberlake infamously let Janet Jackson take all the heat over their little wardrobe malfunction that exposed her breast. Justin never even acknowledged he was actually the one that pulled the fabric away from Janet’s outfit.
Janet Jackson suffered mightily behind the snafu at the time. Her reputation took a serious hit. In today’s Instagram model world the same thing would barely even rate a mention from the blogs.
Justin Timberlake’s greater point with the apology seemed to be about white men and their role in speaking out against misogyny, sexism, and racism. It’s really quite interesting, you should check it out. Until the next time it drips.
