JAY-Z AND MEEK MILL TEAM UP TO PREVENT LYRICS FROM BEING USED IN COURT

JAY-Z and Meek Mill are teaming up. The rap stars are backing a movement to prevent hip-hop lyrics from being used in court.

Hov and the Philly artist aren’t alone in their endeavor, either. They’re also joined by Fat Joe, Big Sean, Yo Gotti, Kelly Rowland, Killer Mike and Robin Thicke among others in urging New York lawmakers to pass the proposed “Rap Music on Trial” bill.

The hopes are that the legislation would become a state law and block the use of any lyrics from songs during trial. Hov’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, shared to Rolling Stone.

“This is an issue that’s important to (Jay-Z) and all the other artists that have come together to try to bring about this change. This is a long time coming. Mr. Carter is from New York, and if he can lend his name and his weight, that’s what he wants to do.”

The bill would limit the use of “creative expression” as evidence, simultaneously pushing prosecutors to prove that the art isn’t just fictional, but rather “clear and convincing evidence.” The late Drakeo the Ruler served three years behind bars after the subject matter of his songs were used to prosecute him, so hopefully this bill put an end to that practice.

Until the next time it drips…
