THE GRAMMYS CATCH BACKLASH OVER VIRGIL ABLOH TRIBUTE

The Grammys are under fire. The Recording Academy is catching heat for their tribute to fashion mogul Virgil Abloh.

The Sunday night event had a somewhat somber undertone triggered by a video address from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which he further condemned Russia’s attack on his country, along with John Legend’s melancholic rendition of “Free,” which included a Ukrainian poet and singer. The mood continued with a tribute to Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, whose band was supposed to play that evening prior to his sudden passing on March 25th.

As a list of tributes scrolled across the screen, names such as Young Dolph and Biz Markie appeared. However, when Virgil Abloh’s name popped up, many viewers were upset with how his tribute was presented.

Many felt the Grammys simply labeled Abloh as a “Hip-hop fashion designer,” not giving him the respect he deserved. In fact, he was the Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton menswear and the founder of the Off-White fashion label.

Gauging by the reaction on Twitter, people were not happy at all. It’s clear limiting his scope to Hip-Hop hardly scratched the surface of all he accomplished in his extensive and storied fashion career. May he rest in peace, and let’s hope the Grammys will do better next time.

Until the next time it drips…
