WILL SMITH REVEALS HE ‘HATED’ BEING CALLED A SOFT RAPPER

Will Smith is getting deep. The Hollywood star has gone online to reveal just how he felt about being called “soft” as a rapper.

He first exploded in Hip-Hop as part of the colorful duo, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, with songs such as “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “Nightmare On My Street.” The two made the decision to keep the lyrics squeaky clean and as a result, Will was often referred to as a “soft” rapper. He has now admitted he always hated the term.

Speaking to David Letterman on a newly-released episode of the Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Smith disclosed his feelings about making clean music. He says he only kept his raps curse-free out of respect for his grandmother.

He started by saying, “That was really our major distinguishing quality at the time.” The 53-year-old explained…

“It was comedy, it was punchlines, it was fun. We stood out in a really good way. We sort of had our own lane … it was always that I was soft. I hated that, being called soft.”

He then said his grandmother sent him a letter saying he didn’t need to swear to stand out, and that’s when he made the choice to cut out all bad words, saying, “That was the reason I never cursed in any of my records.”

Whether he was “soft” as a rapper or not, most people are probably still focused on that Academy Awards slap and whether he was “soft” for going up there to assault Chris Rock. These are wild times…

Until the next time it drips…
