Rapper Kodak Black has been quietly busy this year gearing up to release his new album, Pistolz & Pearlz. Its highly stylized rollout this week leaves no doubt – the rapper came to win.
The Sniper Gang boss unflinchingly stuck to his plan to grace the world with his 5th studio album, even though most of the fan attention has been on the rap beef between Lil Durk and YoungBoy NBA.
The two men seemed to suck all the oxygen out of the room this week with a lot of focus on album sales. Lil Durk’s album, Almost Healed, is projected to sell 150,000 units the first week behind all the hoopla.
The reality is… Kodak Black has a chance to outsell them both. He’s got several songs that could easily catch fire.
Pistolz & Pearlz is 21 tracks worth of ‘kill bill’ heat. The files “Dope Boy Magic,” “Murder Mystery,” and “Gunsmoke Town” are all major gems, and any one of them, or perhaps all, could blow the lid off rap. That’s right… I said what I said.
Not only that, he invested in producing a creative short film called Kodak Black Presents: The Don to enhance the storytelling surrounding his new album. It features Kodak in the lead role as a tortured-soul crime figure trying to keep his sanity, and at the same time, trying to keep his crew members alive.
The Don is only the first in a multi-part cinematic offering, and at last count, it was approaching 300k views on YouTube. The artist appears to be using his new track, “Gunsmoke Town,” as the featured song for the film.
It will truly be interesting to see how rap music fans respond to the rich field of new hip hop material that has developed this week.
At the moment Kodak and Pistolz & Pearlz is not even being talked about, and there are no projections putting the project anywhere near the top ten… of anything.
However, Kodak Black’s work is true. All we can say is… watch this space. Until the next time it drips…
