Dr. Dre has welcomed his former protégé and legendary rapper Eminem into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
The induction ceremony for the Class of 2022 was held on Saturday night and included music greats; Lionel Richie, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Dolly Parton. The late Harry Belafonte also got recognition for his impressive contributions to the music industry.
Dr. Dre gave a speech that highlighted Slim Shady’s impact on the rap game. He revisited the beginning of his relationship with Eminem, including the moment Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine informed him the rapper was white.
Dre admitted the surprise about Eminem’s race, “completely f**ked [him] up.” He continued…
“Over 20 years ago, Jimmy Iovine, who is also one of tonight’s inductees and one of my best friends, played a demo tape for me from a guy who called himself Eminem. The first thing I said when I heard it was, ‘what the f— did he just say?’ I loved it so much that I couldn’t stop listening to it.”
After being impressed by Em’s demo, the “Nothin But A G Thing” legend told attendees he had to confront his own misconceptions about race, rappers, and Hip-Hop. You could see the pride on Dre’s face, as he talked about the respect and appreciation he had for his longtime friend.
It was a truly great for the culture. Congratulations Eminem!
